Connection helper

The Connection helper is a switch in the BedrockConnect app. It helps your console get into servers that would otherwise block it — for example when the console shows an error like "Door" or "Terracotta".

Short version

Leave it on. It is on by default, and you only ever need to turn it off if BedrockConnect support asks you to.

Where to find it

Open the Settings tab in the app. The row is called Connection helper and has a switch next to it. Under it the app says:

Helps consoles join servers that would block them otherwise. Keep it on unless support asks.

It's in BedrockConnect 4.0.82 and newer. If you don't see it, update the app in the App Store or Google Play.

What it does (in simple words)

When you join a server through BedrockConnect, your console first lands in the BedrockConnect LAN world. Then it moves over to the real server. To get in, the console has to "knock on the door" of the server first — a short hello, like showing your ticket at the entrance.

Some servers answer that knock in a way consoles don't like. The console then gives up and shows an error such as "Door" or "Terracotta", even though the server is online and works fine on PC or phone.

With the Connection helper on, your phone checks the server every time you tap Start. If it sees that the server only answers in that awkward way, your phone does the knocking for your console. It passes on the short hello (just a few kilobytes), and then your console walks in by itself.

You don't have to do anything: there is no extra message in the app. The phone decides on its own whether the server needs help.

Your game does not run through your phone

The helper only passes on the short hello at the start. All the actual game traffic — moving, building, chatting — goes straight from your console to the server, exactly like without the helper. BedrockConnect is not a proxy, so it doesn't slow down your game.

When it helps

  • The server is online, but your console shows "Door" or "Terracotta" when it is sent there. That happens when the server is set up in a way consoles don't accept (server owners: see For Server Owners).
  • Your phone and console must be on the same Wi-Fi. If they aren't, the console is sent to the server directly and the helper can't do anything.
What it can't fix
  • A server that is really offline.
  • A wrong address. For a custom server, check the address and port yourself.
  • A server that uses a security certificate your console doesn't trust.
  • A server that blocks the game itself (for example its firewall blocks the game port).
  • A server that is on an older Minecraft version than your console.

For a server problem, only the server owner can fix it. Server owners can find tips on the For Server Owners page.

Should I turn it off?

No — keep it on. It never hurts servers that work fine: for those, the phone simply sends your console straight to the server like before.

If you turn it off, servers that need the helper will fail again with errors like "Door" or "Terracotta". Only switch it off if BedrockConnect support asks you to while you test something with them — and switch it back on afterwards.

Still not working?

  1. Make sure the Connection helper is on and the app is up to date.
  2. Stop the server in the app and tap Start again.
  3. Check the Troubleshooting page.
  4. Ask for help in our Discord and send us your log — see Copy connection log.
